It was late morning on the Bluff with the new sun of the day still rubbing sleep from its eyes as it shone down over the life in the city below.
Shari was sitting quietly by the pond on the main level, her furry white ears flicking with each crunch of gravel under someones hoof or boot, or each random laugh as it was carried on the wind.
Her unfocused eyes were on the pond, lost somewhere between the watery layers of her thoughts. When Roo, her oracle hatchling splashed her with water however she was brought out of her daydreams with a start.
Laughing she dipped her head and tried to look menacing as she snorted a breath through her nostrils at him. He gurgled at her and spun around in a circle. The little dear hadn't spoken to her since the week she had spent with him during the orphan events, but she was ok with that. Words, she found, often got in the way of things anyway most times.
"The pond is too small for you isn't it?" her eyes crinkled with warmth as she raised her head and looked around. "Then I suppose I should take you somewhere more interesting hmn?" She stood up slowly and flicked her tail, making the bell at the end of it jingle softly. "Perhaps somewhere where I can join you too?"
Roo chirped and bounced waddling out of the water to smile up at her with a grin that practically wrapped around his head.
With a soft chuckle Shari stooped down and picked him up cradling him in the crook of her arm. It was like holding a large wet lizard. His tail wagged in anticipation of where they might be going, the sunlight winking off his silvery scale-ish body armor.
Peeking around the area once more warily, more out of habit now then anything, Shari set out toward the lift which would take them down into the green fields of Mulgore below. She knew better then to try and get upon her talbuk prematurely, the beast was so large now she wouldn't fit on the lift while on its back.
As the wood of the lift creaked into position, Roo's fan like ears spread wide and he squirmed in her arm. Stepping ahead she glanced down at him and for the first time was glad for her fur, she barely felt the pricks of the claws on his little hands.
"You know where we are going, don't you little one?"
He gurgled and squirmed again in response looking eagerly Southward.
"Yes, yes calm down," she soothed stepping off the lift once it reached the wooden platform at the bottom, "We can ride over now. But you hang on tight!"
With a whistle she summoned her beautiful tan riding talbuk to her side. He bleated softly and pressed his nose against her shoulder. Before mounting she rubbed the beasts flank taking a moment to look from the cloven hooves to her own with a gentle sigh. Some things still just didn't feel right.
Roo's chittering however would not allow her a moments worth of feeling sorry for herself. She smiled gratefully at the little creature and pressed her soft muzzle into his belly. His small three fingered hands gripped at her nose as she did this before he licked her.
Mounting, the talbuk was eager to take them on their way to Stonebull lake. The sun had climbed a little higher in the sky by now and was beaming happily down at them as they rode up, the talbuks hooves sinking considerably in the soft sand.
Shari filled her lungs with a large breath of the fresh air, and she smiled. It was not the lands she had grown up in, but it still felt like home. It was, nature after all.
The hatchling wasn't about to sit in her arms while she took her time sniffing the air. Soon as their ride had come to a stop he had managed to squirm out of her arms and leap into the water with a very excited, "BOOWAAAHH!" Once there his webbed toes and long flipper like feet carried him easily through the water.
Laughing Shari dismissed her mount and twisted her hooves in the sand, her brow crinkling as she remembered how much she used to love the feel of the sand between her toes.
With Roo having a merry time splashing around by himself, she knelt down and reached out to grip a handful of sand only to stop midway to look at her three fingers. She wiggled them, splayed them out and then made a loose fist as she sunk onto her bottom.
Her eyes closed and her lower lip trembled as she hung her head dejectedly. Slowly it seemed like the world was being sucked away and all was still and quiet- except for the bitter sweet memories of what she used to be. Then just when the memories and loneliness was about to reach out its hand and crush her heart, Roo ran up on the shore and tugged at her arm. It took a moment or two but she finally pulled herself free of her thoughts and smiled at him.
"Oh," her tone was sad despite the smile, "I suppose you wish me to join you, don't you." She nodded and Roo chirped spinning around. "Alright, alright, a moment."
The hatchling scuttled back into the water as she stood and carefully peeled away her purple robe to allow it to fall onto the sand.
She stood silently a moment as the wind caressed its fingers over her body and through her long light brown mane, while the kissed her gently. She was still small for a tauren, perhaps a little too thin, a little too delicate for her own good...but her legs were strong and when she opened her glass blue eyes she looked upon the water with a new determination. Her freckled nose twitched and a faint smile touched her lips. And as she stepped carefully into the water the smile grew.
Without warning she lept forward and dived into the water with a loud splash. Bubbles surged all around her tickling her intimately...and then out of the swirling embrace she appeared as a sea lion. Long, sleek and built for speed. Her back arched as she spun easily, twisting and looping around with the grace of an otter.
Roo was out of his mind with excitement seeing her like this. He knew like this there was only fun to be had. No unhappy faces or sad sighs.
Shari barked bubbles as she fixed her mischievous yellow eyes upon him. He blinked and spun around in a blurring burst of bubbles his eyes laughing as she gave chase.
Together they skimmed the lakes bed, played in the foliage and rotted remnants of large logs. They played hide and seek, and though he found her every single time Shari didn't care. Right now it didn't matter who or what she used to be, right now everything was as it should be, and she was peacefully content in the waters embrace. Perhaps so much hadn't changed after all.
