It had been a beautiful morning when Shari was flying over the (mostly) lush green fields and forest of Val'sharah. The sweet air rushed over her pristinely beautiful midnight blue raven feathers as she soared. Glowing eyes darted all around, taking in her surroundings, admiring the carpets of flowers when something horrible caught her attention.
Just outside Moonclaw Vale, one of the Darkfiend Satyrs was looming over a downed Dreamrunner. A beautiful magical green horse that had a horn in the middle of its forehead. The Dreamrunners were a special creature that had such a wild spirit they could dance from one reality to the Dreaming at will.
Shari perched in a tree not far away and surveyed the scene quickly. About fifteen feet away from the satyr was another Dreamrunner, its head craned at an unnatural angle, and its belly spilling its innards- staining the grass red with pain and suffering. Wincing Shari knew there was nothing she could do for that one, but the other, she noted, was still thrashing its tail, and it's nostrils were flared wide. There were a few visible wounds on its body, but nothing lethal yet.
Setting her jaw she opened her massive wing span and glided in toward the Satyr, crying out a Danassian battle cry that went from the strange raven-like voice to her own as she transformed back into her Night Elven self, tiny bare feet touching down upon the grass, the little bell on her left ankle jingling softly.
Through tendrils of sea green hair her silver eyes burned brightly. Baring her fangs at the demon as she stood at the ready to attack. "You will harm that creature no further demon!"
"Ahhh, another subject to add to my collection." The satyr smiled, its ugly, twisted face turning to focus on the elf.
Shari snorted and twisted her foot, then clawed her hands and drew them upward from the ground. Hungry great earthy roots sprang from the ground at the satyrs cloven feet making him look down in surprise. In the same moment Shari made a movement as if drawing something to her heart. The little 5'5 visage faded out and began to shimmer and sparkle with astral attunement.
Crying out in Darnassian she hissed and thrust her clenched fists into the air calling upon moon fire to strike the enemy.
He howled in pain, then quickly shot a bolt of shadow at her, making her have to tuck and roll to the side. Quick on her feet she got up and sliced her hand through the air in an upward angle now calling upon the suns fire.
"Curse you little witch!" the satyr snarled as his body began to burn and bubble. With his last breath he was able to get off another round of shadow fire before he fell to the ground lifeless beside the Dreamrunner.
Panting softly Shari nipped her lower lip, her concerned eyes on the horse. It was breathing heavily, tail still thrashing.
"Shhh..." She murmured to it in Darnassian softly, one hand reached out as she inched closer. Never had one of these stunning creatures ever let her touch them. She had been trying for months to gain the trust of one with no luck.
The beast whinnied in warning at her its coal black eyes rolling back in its head to the point she could see the whites. Its tail whipped again and it tried to get up only to cry out the moment it moved its legs.
As Shari got closer she came to find there were long, gashes along its legs, veined with shadow magic. Just exactly what the Satyr had been doing was anyones guess... but she could feel the poor animal's pain now, and it had to end. She glanced to the heavens and beseeched Elune to grant her Her aid in this moment, to save one of Her beautiful creatures.
The Darnassian crooning continued as Shari circled around to the other side of the animal, kneeling by its side. She was very mindful of his sharp hooves and horn- either of which could rend her easily should he get the strength to lunge. Calling on old magics, Shari managed to get off a spell that calmed him enough to (finally) lay one hand on his shoulder, and the other on his flank.
A strange bolt of energy shot through her, it was not entirely all unpleasant.... just unexpected. The Dream runner watched her with wide eyes, his nostrils flared widely, panting with hot, terrified breaths.
Continuing in Darnassian, she whispered, "i will try to heal you now... You are a fine creature, and deserve to be running wild and free again." Her lips moved wordlessly as her eyes slid closed and she began casting her most powerful healing magics. Green nature magics began to envelop the horse, a soft breeze picking up about them both.
Time stood still. Both scarcely breathed it seemed...
In the safety of Shari's mind's eye, she found herself standing on a quiet flowery field in Val'sharah. The birds were singing, a soft breeze was blowing and everything was perfumed with the lovely scent of the wild flowers. From behind her she heard a whinny, and as she turned, found the stallion she was healing. He was standing proudly before her, ears pricked forward as he studied her.
Words eluding her, all she could think to do, was bow. Clasping a fist into the palm of her other hand she slipped a foot behind the other she bent at the knee and bowed her head, raising her palmed hand to her forehead.
The Dream runner snorted a few times and bobbed it's head, its thick green mane tousling about its face and neck before the scene dissolved and Shari found herself opening her eyes, knelt at the Dream runner's side. His wounds were gone and he was just lying there, head raised, watching her.
She blinked a few times and slowly pulled her hands back as the healing magics abated. The wounds were gone and he was fully healed.
Swallowing she tilted her head to the side wondering why he hadn't gotten up yet. It was unnatural for a horse to lie on their sides like this... as it conflicted with their natural ability to run and bolt if need be. Perhaps Runners could phase into the Dream without needing to stand negating that worry?
His breathing had returned to normal, in fact, he seemed downright calm and relaxed. This encouraged Shari so, that she tentatively reached out her hand nearest to his face, aiming to try and touch the side of his neck- when he moved suddenly and pressed his velvet muzzle under her palm. His nostrils flared as he took in her scent.
Shari sat frozen, unsure what to do. After a moment she slid her hand upward along the front of his face until the tip of her middle finger was almost touching the base of the horn.
That's when the horse turned his face away and stood, now looking down at the little night elf with pricked ears and a swishing tail.
"Ishnu-Alah..." she whispered... "i am glad you are ok now."
The stallion snorted and slowly walked toward his fallen comrade, stopping to touch noses when he had gotten close enough.
Shari stood and carefully followed behind him. Her heart tightened as she gazed upon the brutality at which this one had suffered. The closer she got, she realized the one who had been killed was a female. Then it hit her.
"She was... your mate, wasn't she?" her eyes began to shimmer with tears. "Oh i am so sorry i wasn't here sooner... Please... please forgive me." She clutched her hands before her and bowed her head.
The next thing she knew, there was a soft nose being pressed into her neck, as the stallion stood before her, being very gentle and careful. She jumped slightly and opened her eyes, a trembling hand reaching to touch the muscular neck.
That odd sensation that had coursed through her earlier tingled in the back of her mind and she looked into the horses eyes. "You understand me, don't you? You can feel what i feel at the very least..."
He only snorted and flicked his tail, taking a few steps so that Shari was standing by his shoulder. It was then the great stallion knelt down on his front legs and used his nose to push at her back toward him.
Not entirely believing what was happening, Shari pulled her skirt up her soft thighs, enough so that she could then uncertainly jump up on the stallions back. The moment she was up the animal jumped back up and looked back at her a moment before turning to face his fallen mate one last time.
As they looked upon the body, Shari noted it was beginning to fade into a sparkling mist. "May you rest in Elune's embrace."
Once it had entirely disappeared the stallion reared and galloped off, granting Shari the rare gift of riding upon a Dream runner. She hung onto fistfuls of his thick mane as she rode along, her eyes wide with happiness and surprise. "Oh, Shan'do told me i was not to ride anyone else, but i do not think he would mind you!" She laughed and tossed her head back, freeing her hair from her pony tails to allow her long tresses to spill out into the breeze, as free as the Dream runner was once again.
